What You Shouldn’t Wear to Work

January 31, 2012 By Anna

A conservative black form-fitting suit shows stylishness, while short skirts and stilettos show that you get around. Putting on the appropriate ensemble will help you send me the right message. Here are some items which you should avoid wearing to work:

Sexy Outfits

Sexy is a word defined in many ways. It may not necessarily be revealing, but it can exude sexiness. What should be avoided though are clothes that resemble lingerie. Lacy camisoles or bustier type shirts must only be worn on night outs. It can be distracting for some people, so it is best to cover it up with a fitted jacket or cardigan so people will not get the wrong impression.

Gym Clothes

Some say that casual wear does not belong at the office, but some companies allow their employees to be themselves. It is okay to be comfortable, but it is best to steer away from tank tops, yoga pants and spandex shorts. Running shoes, track jackets and sweatshirts may be used sparingly or dusting casual days

Shimmery Clothes

Unless you are planning to go on a night out or you have a performance, sequined or shiny clothes are definitely not for work. Patent leather belts, bags or shoes can give off shimmer and they are friendlier alternatives. Earrings can also add a subtle bling.

Statements Shirts

People in the workplace may have different perspectives, so it is best to stay clear of topics or issues which may raise eyebrows. Standing out is as easy as adding color to what you wear.

Too Much Perfume

Your co-workers may be sensitive to strong smells. You can use scented lotion for a more subtle scent or simply spray conservatively. One or two spritzes will do to get you through the day.

What we usually wear is a reflection of our personality; even the most boring gray suit can be glammed up by accessories –scarves, jewelry and the likes. It also shows our level of professionalism. The way we dress is our packaging on how we want others to perceive us.
