Autism Up By 172%

September 23, 2006 By Ivo

Its shocking to know that just since the 1990’s, autism has risen by an astounding 172%. In fact, experts say that 1 in every 166th child wil be diagnosed by some form of autism – from the high-functioning Aspergers to full blown autism where round-the-clock care is needed.
In the US, it is the fastest growing developmental disability in children, being the second leading cause of disability in children, just after mental retardation.

It has become so mainstream that nearly everyone is bound to know somewhone who has it. If not a family member, maybe a friend or neighbor’s child, or someone in your child’s school. Even celebrities are openly speaking about their children with the disorder.
Its a terrifying prospect for parents and the worst thing is that nobody really knows what causes it. Some medical experts blame vaccinations containing Themirosal, a preservative which contains mercury. Another study released from Israel recently blamed older fathers, stating that fathers over 40 were 6 times more likely to have autistic children than men in their 20’s or 30’s.

Whatever it is, the fact remains that Autism is growing and will continue to affect children everywhere until science finds a way to stop it.

Brits Clamp Down Laws For Young Boozers

September 15, 2006 By Ivo

Its no secret that the Brits have a drinking problem. In fact, their Prime Minister Tony Blair proclaimed it himself two years ago, calling binge drinking the “New British Disease”.

Well, in an effort to hopefully stop the youth from following the slurring path of their elders, the British goverment has called for tighter laws with the under-25 drink-drive limit and smoking.

Heres what the government’s advisory committee on the misuse of drugs (ACMD) had to say in their publication “Pathway to Problems”:

“Among the 6.8 million 16-24 year old’s in the UK, there were 2.1 Million daily smokers, 1.9 Million who drink more than twice the recommended amount at least once each week, and 1 Million who have used an illegal drug in the past month.”

The new laws being considered will include educating the youth on the consequences of heavy alcohol and nicotine use, the increase of the legal tobacco age from 16 to 18, and simply making alcohol more expensive among others.

Cool New Safer Shopping Carts

August 8, 2006 By Ginny

Every parent knows how hard it can be to shop with kids. Unfortunately, we often don’t have a choice since no one will take care of them while we’re gone. So we bring them along and pray that they will behave.

We are all thankful for the shopping carts. It gets really tiring carrying the children around plus your grocery too. So you plunk them in the seat and start shopping.

Most people forget to have the kids put on the seat belt. Sometimes the kids stand up or the cart tips over. End result: injuries to the kids. Did you know that there were 24,000 shopping cart accidents involving kids? This is according to the report of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Joseph Russell has an idea on how to reduce this number. His suggestion: lower the center of gravity of the carts. Doing so makes it less possible for the kids to fall out the side or for the cart to tip over from their weight. Definitely less risk for the kids.

While Dr. Russell’s invention isn’t standard use in stores yet, he has already provided some stores with? kid-friendly carts. The kids will definitely enjoy riding the low-to-the-ground cars attached to the front of the cart. Better yet, grab one of the newest carts. They have TV’s inside that play the latest videos. You may just find yourself stuck in the store til the show finishes but at least your kids will be safer than before.
